The 4th Armoured Division of the 3rd Army under command of general Patton decided to break through the German defense from the south to Bastogne. The divisions of general Patton came from France (southwards). The 4th succeeded the second Christmas day to break through the surrounding of Bastogne. But the battle of Bastogne continued until January 17 because the Germans kept trying to surround the town again.
The 4th liberated Bastogne and proceeded on to Houffalize. The snow, heavy fighting and a lot of losses slowed down the troops. On January 16 the troops of general Patton connected to the 1st US Army.
