The next stop was at Veghel. Here we found a monument for the 501st PIR. This monument exists of a kangaroo on a big boulder. Kangaroo was the code name of this regiment. We didnít stop at the bridge over the Zuid-Willemsvaart (Southern Canal of Willem) as it didnít give an impression at all of a situation in 1944.
The biggest part of the 501st PIR landed next to Veghel. They captured the bridges over the Willemskanaal and the river Aa. On September 22, the Germans made a heavy counterattack.
