82nd Airborne Division

Three Parachute Infantry Regiments of the 82nd US Airborne Division under command of general James M. Gavin were dropped south of Nijmegen.
The 504th PIR was dropped on both sides of the bridge over the river Maas next to Grave. They had to capture this bridge and also 3 bridges over the Maas-Waalkanaal (canal between the rivers Maas and Waal.)
The 505th PIR was dropped between Mook and Groesbeek and had to capture the bridges over the Maas-Waalkanaal from the east. They also had to capture the railway bridge over the Maas.
The 508th PIR was dropped north of Groesbeek and they had to capture the railway bridge and the traffic bridge over the river Waal at Nijmegen. They couldn’t clear the southern bank of the Germans and had to make another plan. The 504th PIR had to cross the river and attack the bridge from the north. In the end they succeeded, but with heavy losses.
