On 7 June Saint-Lô was 90% destroyed by bombardments. But it took the Americans until July 25th to liberate the city.
We visited the monument for Major Thomas D. Howie on Place Major Howie. Major Howie wanted to be the first one to march into town. Unfortunately, he was killed in battle the day before the march was to take place. His men placed his body, wrapped in Stars and Stripes, at the door of the church Sainte-Croix.
